The Legendary ErtuGrul Gazi: Founder of Ottoman Empire

ErtuGrul Gazi was one of those very influential Turkish tribal leaders in the 13th century, who founded the Ottoman Empire-one of the greatest empires to ever exist throughout all of history and culture. He was as gallant, wise, tactician, and very dedicated that paved the magnificent ascension of the Ottoman dynasty.

Early Life and Background

Ertugrul was born in the year 1198 AD at Ahlat, eastern Anatolia, modern-day Turkey. He is a son to the famous Turkish tribal leader named Süleyman Sah. On the death of his father, he succeeded as a chief of the Kayı tribe. The Kayı people were nomads during the early thirteenth century. They were known for their warrior spirits and horsemanship suited them very well to the weather of Anatolia.

Rise to Power:

Ertugrul’s movement of populism first began in the 1230s when he joined up with the mighty Turkish state, Seljuk Sultanate. He even fought some very crucial battles against Mongols and even the Byzantine Empire since he thought himself to be quite an intellectual when there was a war in their vicinity. His conquest brought him such great popularity and respect in front of the Seljuk Sultan that he was bestowed lands and power.
Birth of the Ottoman Empire

In 1299, he had his capital from which he started the Ottoman Empire in a small town found in north Anatolia, called Sogut. From this end, the Ottoman Empire emerged to flourish for nearly another 600 years over the three continents. Many religious devotees entered his side and he was only left with two sons, Gündüz and Osman, who later would prove his successors.

Legacy

Ertugrul’s legacy wasn’t based on the military victory alone:

1. Tribal Unity: He brought many Turkish tribes into one entity, and that eventually came to be known as the Ottomans.
2. Alliances: Ertugrul forged crucial alliances with neighboring states; those alliances provided strategic trade routes and resources.
